The Aviva group of companies heritage

It began in a café in 1696.

November 12, 1696 to be exact. That’s when Hand-in-Hand, once the world’s oldest existing fire insurance office, was founded in a London café. The vision at the time was to provide peace of mind to a relatively new breed of Londoners: home owners.

Over the years, the Aviva group of companies and their predecessors have served some pretty famous people including Sir Isaac Newton, the Guinness family, Sir Winston Churchill and former US President John F. Kennedy.

The company evolved through a series of mergers, the addition of new insurance lines like auto and travel, and the creation of sister companies including the Canada Accident Assurance Company, our first presence in Canada in 1887.

But our vision and values never changed: Trust. Security. Comfort. The goal is to be there when people need us.
